Professors Rita Gunther McGrath and Adam Grant to deliver keynotes at the conference and exhibition, Manchester, 5 – 6 November 2014

CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, has announced the programme for this year’s Annual Conference and Exhibition, in partnership with IBM, which will take place at Manchester Central on 5 – 6 November.

The conference, which attracts thousands of HR professionals each year will feature speakers from a range of top organisations including KFC, Google, Civil Service HR UK, ActionAid and Virgin Trains, and is built around four key themes this year:
The opening keynote will come from world renowned business thinker Rita Gunther McGrath, Professor at Columbia Business School, who will share her insights on why companies need to focus on constantly evolving in order to keep up with today’s rapidly changing world. She will also talk about the challenges this presents for leaders.

After two days of networking, informative sessions and workshops, the closing keynote will be delivered by renowned author and leading social scientist Professor Adam Grant of the University of Pennsylvania.  He will show how greater collaboration and the way we interact with others can make a real impact on organisational success. His thought-provoking address will draw on cutting-edge research from his best seller Give and Take.

Peter Cheese, Chief Executive at CIPD, comments: “This year’s conference is themed around high impact HR – which is what business requires to build the agile organisations and workforces capable of thriving in today’s fast moving, competitive, global business environment. Our profession has a unique role in championing better work and working lives for the benefit of individuals, businesses, and the wider economies and society in which we live, and it’s never been more important that we step up to this broader responsibility and opportunity. The conference will be looking at everything from the big picture and changing context, to the practical tools you need to make a difference now.

“We'll be talking about the future of HR, and we look forward to the discussion with delegates that this will bring.  There will be practical sessions to help you with everything from recruiting and developing your workforce to development of workforce and organisation strategies, and we will be focusing on the newer areas of research and thinking that will help us build more effective processes and capabilities for the future. The conference will again be a great opportunity for learning, for networking, and for sharing your experiences and ideas, and together with the exhibition is the largest event of its kind in the UK. If you’re looking for the inspiration and practical guidance to make a real difference and sustain long time business success, I hope to see you at the conference.”

Jonathan Ferrar, Vice President for IBM Smarter Workforce, comments:
"The world is moving so rapidly that we have to respond - as leaders, as HR professionals and as employees. In fact, there has never been a better time to be able to respond to the challenges we face; we understand more about what makes people great at their jobs, we have the social technology to facilitate more effective collaboration across teams and even geographies and we are able to discover meaningful insights with our analytics expertise.”

“We call the confluence of behavioural science, workforce analytics, talent management and social collaboration technology a Smarter Workforce. It's at the centre of how businesses will improve their performance through people in the next five years and it's something the CIPD supports as well. We are proud to sponsor this year's CIPD conference and look forward to working closely with our HR colleagues as they seek to reap the rewards of a Smarter Workforce."
