Some may refer to Gran Canaria’s reputation as a ‘continent in miniature’ as a cliché, but there is no other way to describe this fascinating island.  Part of a Spanish archipelago but situated just 150km off the coast of north western Africa, Gran Canaria contains every variation of terrain you can think of, as the southern desert gives way to a mountainous interior and the green leafy north.  The long sandy beaches that the island is famous for borders the stunning coastline and the turquoise waters, whilst the number of museums, churches, and historic old towns make Gran Canaria the perfect place to pull on your hiking boots and explore the island’s fascinating past.

Getting back to nature is a favourite pastime of those living on Gran Canaria, and visitors are routinely lured by the towering mountains, sprawling deserts and secluded beaches.  Head to the centre of the island and discover the seemingly impenetrable mountain range which almost appears to be out of place in such an exotic location.  In complete contrast to these rugged mountains, the Dunas de Maspalomas is a nature reserve formed from an almost endless run of golden rolling sand dunes.  The huge scale of the area makes it feel almost completely isolated and, thanks to the open horizon, the Dunas de Maspalomas is the perfect place to go for a late walk before relaxing to watch the sun go down.  Equally captivating is Las Canteras Beach, one of the island’s most famous stretches of sand and a favourite spot for surfers and swimmers alike.  Spread out over 3km, the beach never feels crowded and the numerous fine seafood restaurants make it a great place to spend an entire day relaxing and catching some sun.

For a more urban-centred experience, nothing beats the capital city, Las Palmas.  One of the largest Spanish cities and the biggest in the Canary Islands, visitors are almost guaranteed warm temperatures all year round and will certainly experience fine-dining, lively tapas bars and numerous sites of historical interest.  Veguesta is a vibrant historical enclave that it becoming increasingly popular with those searching for a relaxed yet energetic nightlife.  Shopping is best done in the Triana district, voted as the best commercial Spanish street in 2013 and the home to some of the most incredible ice cream vendors.
