A Cruise along the Côte D’Azur

A Cruise along the Côte D’Azur

The Côte D’Azur, also known as the French Riviera, is a palatial playground full of glamour and sophistication.  A haven of wealth, royalty and undeniable decadence, it has long served as the ultimate destination for enjoying a yachting holiday or unrivalled proportions.  The chic towns along the French Riviera provide an attractive backdrop to cosmopolitan mansions, restaurants and boutiques, whilst magnificent hills, miles of sandy beaches and the sapphire seas will create the luxury experience of a lifetime.

Marseille

As France’s second largest city, Marseille provides the perfect first stop on a cruise along the Côte D’Azur.  Beneath the red roofed outlook, Marseille is packed full of history, especially surrounding its colourful port, and the shopping quarter Le Panier, which offers a labyrinth of beautiful town houses, artisan shops and workshops.  Equally magnificent is the Palais de Longchamp, constructed in the 1860s and the 16th Century Château d’If, made famous by Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo.  As well as the beautiful architecture Marseille has fantastic beaches such as popular Plage des Catalans, and divine restaurants serving the city’s signature dish, bouillabaisse.

Saint Tropez

Prior to the 1950s, Saint Tropez was a quiet fishing village but all that changed with the arrival of a film crew and Brigitte Bardot.  Saint Tropez still retains its glittering image, one of divine stretches of beaches and luxurious yachts, and yet it was before Bardot’s time that this destination was attracting artistic figures including Picasso.  The Vieux Port is lined with the biggest and most magnificent yachts and the Porte de la Poissonnerie is the best market for freshly caught fish.  For Saint Tropez specialities, sample sweet custard between two brioche or purchase the local and traditionally crafted Rondini Sandals, aptly named Tropeziennes.

Cannes

Along the coastline from Saint Tropez is the home of the famous Film Festival, Cannes boasts many sandy beaches which are ideal for exhilarating water sports and sunbathing alike.  La Croisette, with its palm lined promenade, is a must see for its couture shops and spectacular views out to sea.  Cannes also has some of the best and most sophisticated restaurants and night clubs, including Sea Sens which perfectly blends French cuisine with Asian flavours and the buzzing Le Sun 7.  To gain a real sense of historical Cannes visit Le Suquet for breathtaking views over the bay and its fantastically traditional market.

Nice

The charm of Nice seems to originate from the azure waters and backdrop of outstandingly beautiful mountains.  The appeal is heightened by its cosmopolitan credentials, its rich artistic streak and impressively vibrant night life.  Amongst Nice’s stunning locations, it is the Promenade des Anglais and the Bay of Angels which are understandably most famous, with their outlook of that distinctively blue ocean and magnificent sunsets.  Nice is rich in culture, from their architecturally beautiful Opéra de Nice to the ever youthful Galerie de la Marine, which champions upcoming contemporary artists.  For views over the whole of Nice, the Parc du Château is the perfect location.
