A Day trip to Monfero

A Day trip to Monfero

By Charlotte Wilson

Many visitors to Galicia arrive in search of the glistening Mediterranean sunshine, golden sand beaches and excellent surf conditions. However, prising yourself away from the sun lounger for just one day will provide ample time to discover the unexpected and hidden treasures of Monfero, a small agricultural village a short drive from La Coruña.

Monfero offers visitors the opportunity to peruse a number of spectacular ruins of the Middle Ages including, notably, the Monfero Abbey. The original Monasterio de Santa María de Monfero (Monfero Abbey) has been built and destroyed many times. It was first constructed in the 10th Century as a Benedictine monastery, dedicated to St. Mark. It was then destroyed during Norman raids and reconstructed under Alfonso VII in 1134. In 1147, the abbey joined the Cistercian order as a daughter house of Sobrado Abbey. In the 17th Century the monastery suffered more misfortune when it was struck by lightning before being rebuilt again between 1620 and 1658. In this instance lightning really does strike twice with further damage being caused by lightning in 1805. The abbey was repaired and is mostly built with granite and slate; the baroque main alter was built in 1666 and the monastery is well worth a visit when you are in the Galicia area. One of the main attractions within the abbey is the stunning tile designed cupola ceiling which has anything but a gothic feel to it.

If you have any spare time left over after your day at the Monfero Abbey, then be sure to visit take a trip to nearby Eume Fragas (Natural Park). A protected park that is recognised by the European Union as a Site of Community Importance; it features stunning Oakland, beautiful waterfalls and hidden bridges that blend into the woodlands surroundings. The forest is home to over 200 species of fern and is inhabited by fewer than 500 people which make exploration all the more peaceful.
