Experience an Ethiopian City

Experience an Ethiopian City

Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

The third largest city in Ethiopia and the capital of the Amhara Region, Bahir Dar bustles with metropolitan vitality and plays host to magnificent natural landmarks which make it a leading tourist destination. Famous for its palm-tree laden avenues and stunning panoramic views which take in the glistening expanse of Lake Tana, Bahir Dar has a humble beauty which draws from the rich culture of the Amahara people as well as the vibrant African landscape.

The city has a number of structures which date back to the 16th or 17th Century, including one surviving building by Jesuit missionary Pedro Páez, often credited as the founder of the settlement which would eventually become Bahir Dar, whose moss-covered structure now sits in the compound of St. George’s monastery. The city’s long historical association with Christianity is reflected in its numerous religious landmarks, structures both historical and contemporary offering a unique perspective on a very traditional Christian sect that makes up most of Amhara’s religion.

Bahir Dar is home to approximately 20 monasteries which date back as far the medieval era, charting the attempted (but ultimately unsuccessful) spread of Catholicism among the Amhara people. These are invaluable as archaeological and cultural heritage sites, some also acting as museums with exhibitions of relics and paintings of the era. Due to religious doctrine women are often not allowed inside the monasteries. In addition to its religious and archaeological sites, Bahir Dar is also host to a series of guided tours which explore its surrounding area, with treks and expeditions running to the Ethiopian highlands.

The city’s proximity to Lake Tana offers holidaymakers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a quiet shore-side relax in the baking Ethiopian sun, though visitors of a more adventurous inclination are likely to be found visiting the majestic Blue Nile Falls.
