Exploring West Bay Doha: The Capital’s Premier Neighbourhood

Exploring West Bay Doha: The Capital’s Premier Neighbourhood

Doha, Qatar

Al-Corniche (The Ridge) is one of the most stunning waterfront promenades in the world, and is certainly Qatar’s best boulevard. Winding about seven kilometres along the coast, it not only has a variety of restaurants and cultural hotspots, but it provides a perfect view of Doha’s breathtaking skyscrapers, which are all the more impressive when seen at night.

One of the aforementioned cultural delights found along Al-Corniche is the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). With impressive collections, such as ceramics dating back to the Ottoman Empire and manuscripts including a page from The Shahnameh (Book of Kings), the longest epic poem ever written by a single person, it would be impossible to enter this imposing building and not be impressed. However, note that the MIA is always closed on Tuesdays and Eid al-Adha (The Feast of Sacrifice), and that nobody is admitted into the building later than 11:30pm, 30 minutes before closing time.

Perhaps the most fascinating place to visit in Doha’s West Bay is the Katara Cultural Village; as well as having a wide range of international cuisine, from Armenian (Mamig Restaurant) to Egyptian (Khan Farouk Tarab Café) to Italian (le Vesuvio), and an exterior that looks like an Arabesque version of Rome’s Colosseum, it also has an amphitheatre where the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra perform. Two more strings to the Cultural Village’s bow are the fireworks displays held there during all four days of Eid, and the numerous art galleries where you can purchase contemporary local artwork.
