Heralding the Inevitable: Why Online Gaming will Soon be Broadly Legal in the U.S.

A decade ago, a broad description of the gaming industry would include references to console platforms and video titles. The emergence of online platforms has changed this, however, diversifying the market as a whole and adding richness to the lives of individual gamers throughout the world. At the heart of this is the rise of online gambling and casino sites, which now represent huge business and generate more than $1 billion in revenue across the cumulative global marketplace.

This evolution has met with some initial opposition in the U.S.; however, with the result that legal online gambling is only authorized in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware.  This is unlikely to remain the case for long, however, with legislative gears grinding in states such as California and Pennsylvania in a bid to deliver legalized gambling to a mainstream audience. There are even moves to create a dedicated online gambling network in Canada, which would enable legal game play and the opportunity for transparent regulatory measures.

As a result, we seem to be heading towards a point where online gambling will be broadly legal in the U.S. within the next five years. In fact, it is almost inevitable, and there are numerous factors that point to this. Take the success that the Delaware authorities have had in monetizing online gambling revenues, which in turn has generated huge amounts of capital that can be reinvested into state programs. There is also the small matter of the worlds’ first legal, online gambling millionaire, who was unveiled last week in the garden state of New Jersey after winning a cool $1.3 million.

These factors are compelling, and have helped to build considerable momentum in the quest to make online gambling legal. With barriers being breached and perceptions changing all the time, now is the time for online gambling to finally emerge as a viable and legalized past-time.
