Home Security Is Becoming Increasingly Important for Home Based Workers

While it is becoming increasingly more common for professionals to be working from home, at least part of the time, home burglaries are also on the rise. Whether you operate your own business from home or are a corporate home-based worker, it is vital that you understand the importance of home security. Following are a few statistics and factoids you may wish to think about.

Most Home Burglaries Are Committed by Neighbors!

This is being listed first because it is the most frightening statistic of all. Perhaps the reason why so many home burglaries are committed by people who live in the neighborhood is because of the ease at which they can observe your everyday habits. They can see when you leave to take the kids to school, when you typically shop for dinner and they will certainly know when you are away on vacation or for a period of more than a day or two.

So many families have ignored the importance of stopping the US mail and daily newspapers which is a sure giveaway that no one is at home. Someone living close by only needs to see 2 or 3 newspapers in the drive to know it’s safe to enter the premises. And, did you know that it only takes a few minutes to break into a home, and take everything but the kitchen sink? You could be deep in thought in your home office and never be the wiser! That is another factoid worth mentioning. Almost 1/3 of all burglaries happen with someone at home.

Theft of Intellectual Property Is on the Rise

Can you imagine what would have happened to Bill Gates in the early days had someone broken into the garage where it all started with Microsoft? Not all criminals are tech savvy, but they know how to steal a computer or laptop, and that could be your entire livelihood if something like that should happen. All your bank records and personal as well as business financial information is on your computer, so it’s vital that you install some form of home security to protect your income.

Burglars Understand Why So Many Homes Go Unprotected

One of the things which many home based businesses have in common is an extremely limited budget and would-be robbers understand this! All it takes is someone with nefarious intent living nearby to get wind of the fact that you are operating a home based business and they will begin watching for home security to be installed.

They also know that usually something like this is cost prohibitive to a home-based startup but they won’t be counting on an extremely cost effective home security system like SimpliSafe that you can install yourself in mere minutes. It doesn’t take any technical knowledge and there are no recurring fees associated with a system like this. In fact, you don’t even need internet connectivity because the device works through a cell phone type communication when your home is breached.

Can You Afford Not to Secure Your Livelihood?

The point being made in all this is that with the availability of inexpensive DIY home security systems, can you afford not to install security to protect your livelihood? If you were working in an office downtown, do you think your employer would forego some kind of security due to costs? You are working from home and if you are employed by a company, chances are your ability to work from home hinges on whether or not any intellectual or financial property can be safeguarded.

Whether you are your own boss or are working for someone else, can you really afford not to have home security? Don’t be pennywise and pound foolish. Protect your home and your business if you don’t want to face the average robbery that tallies over $2,000. That’s a lot of money by anyone’s standards. No, you cannot afford not to have home security. That’s an honest fact.
