You might think that once you have decided to become a lawyer and got into law school, all your big decisions will be over. All you need to do now is qualify and get a job, right?  However, you also need to think about which area of law you would like to specialize in, and that can be a hard decision to make. Here are a few ideas about areas of the law that are worth specializing in.

Patent Law

If you have always wanted to work with inventors and the inventions they have created, here is your chance. Patent law grants the inventor exclusive rights to their invention for a set time. You could find yourself working for the inventor, the patent office, or even the government.

Intellectual Property Law

Once a person has acquired their patent, then need to protect it, and Intellectual Property Law does just that. They cover a company’s legal right to the assets they hold. This includes copyrights for authors or musicians, which could see you working with some top celebrities.

Intellectual Property Law tends to be broken down into six different sections, namely: patent law, trademark law, copyright law, trade secret law, licensing, and unfair competition. This makes it a complex, interesting, and lucrative area of the law to specialize in.

Employment Law

Employment law covers everything from an employee’s initial contract to the handling of employees once they are in the workplace and making sure that disciplinary procedures and grievances are handled correctly. They also deal with cessation of employment contracts, whether this relates to one employee or making mass redundancies. This is a varied and interesting role that will see you getting involved in all areas of employment.

Environmental Law

If you care about the environment, this is an area of law where your specialization could make a big difference. Environmental law deals primarily with the protection of the environment. It makes businesses accountable for the effect their business practices have on the environment and encourages them to become more eco-friendly in the business world.

Constitutional Law

Constitutional Law is a great thing to specialize in if you want to represent people and believe in fair play and the American Constitution. It upholds the law regarding the constitution and the amendments to it, covers things such as freedom of speech, and preserves the relationship between individuals, state, and federal governments. This is a diverse area where each case you take on is likely to be different and interesting.

Criminal Law

This is a good area to specialize if you want to be involved with the justice system. You may find yourself representing the state or federal government or the individuals accused of a crime. Most criminal lawyers will further specialize in either prosecution or defense and you will spend a lot of time in the courtroom arguing your case. This is a great place for people who like to debate.
