One of the fun aspects of doing genealogy research is that sometimes you have to get out on the road and go to some library, court house or archive location for some in-person research. But if you are going to take the time to make such a trip, you will want to make the most of it. Here are some tips on how to plan for a successful genealogy research trip.
First you want to have a good inventory of supplies with you. Take a bag with paper, pencils, post-it notes, highlighters, paper clips, stapler, file folders, and anything else that you would typically use when doing research. If you prefer a hi-tech approach, you'll want a portable document scanner, digital camera and possibly even a laptop computer. Better to have something with you that you don't need than get your hands on some vital documents and be without some important item. Photocopiers and microfilm machines may require change, so bring coins too.
Before you leave, you should have a plan of action mapped out. Know what you're looking for and where to find it. Have a list of book titles, film reels, dates, counties, names and whatever you can muster to help you located your documents quickly. Know what you're after and where to find it. If you're on more of a fishing trip, without specific documents in mind, still know what branches of your family are likely to be found at this location and have a clue what surnames to watch for.
