Sam Maizel leads Pachulski Stang Ziehl & Jones LLP’s healthcare industry advisory and restructuring efforts.  Pachulski Stang is the nation’s largest firm devoted to advising clients on restructuring and insolvency law, with offices in New York City; Wilmington, Delaware; San Francisco and Los Angeles, California.  Sam has successfully advised and represented healthcare industry debtors, committees, creditors, governmental agencies, real estate investment trusts, equity funds, trustees, patient care ombudsman and third-party purchasers of assets, in matters involving, among others, hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, skilled nursing facilities, specialty clinics, health plans, medical groups, and integrated physician associations.  For more than a decade he has also led the firm’s representation of the Attorneys General of forty-six states and six territories on matters related to their Master Settlement Agreement with the tobacco industry.  He has served as lead debtor’s counsel in cases such as Victor Valley Community Hospital, S&B Surgery Center, and Health Plan of the Redwoods, represented official committees of unsecured creditors in cases such as Hawaii Medical Center, Valley Health System, and Pacifica Hospital of the Valley, and represented governmental agencies in cases such as Santa Paula Memorial Hospital, American Home Healthcare of Georgia, and In re St. Johns Home Health Agency, Inc.  Sam is a nationally known lecturer, and has spoken at more than 150 programs for organizations including the American Medical Association, the American Health Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys, and the Healthcare Finance Management Association.  He is frequently published on healthcare and/or insolvency issues.  Currently, he is a contributing editor and author on healthcare insolvency related topics to the ABI Journal, Collier on Bankruptcy and California Health Law News.  He has chaired the ABA’s Working Group on Healthcare Related Bankruptcy Issues and the ABI’s Healthcare Committee.  Prior to joining Pachulski Stang, Sam was an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice where, among other clients, he represented the Department of Health and Human Services and the Health Care Financing Administration in national healthcare industry bankruptcy cases.  Previously, he served in the U.S. Army, first as an Infantry Officer, and later as an attorney with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps, including service in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.  Sam has a B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point, an M.A. from Georgetown University, and a J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center.  He is a member of the Pennsylvania and California bars.
