After obtaining a B.Sc (Metallurgy) from the University of Pretoria, Rina joined the law firm D M Kisch Inc as a candidate attorney in 1994. She obtained her B.Proc (cum laude) from the University of South Africa in 1998 and qualified as a patent attorney in 1999. Soon after she was appointed to the board of directors of D M Kisch Inc, the then first female patent attorney to be appointed as such in the history of the firm.

Rina remained a director at D M Kisch Inc until 2006, when she was offered a partnership position in the patent chemical department of Spoor & Fisher. She remained a partner at Spoor & Fisher until the end of February 2011, when she resigned to start Gunter Attorneys.
